Carers Week Part 3: My 20-Year Journey with the Lisieux Trust – By Rosa

Hello, my name is Rosa, and I’ve been part of the Lisieux Trust family for 20 years. I came to the Trust when I was 21 because I wanted to be more independent. I couldn’t live on my own at that time—my legs made things difficult, and I have a learning disability. I knew if I tried to do everything by myself, I’d end up lonely.

Before joining the Trust, I went to two special schools because I needed speech therapy. I could talk, but I struggled to express my feelings and worries. Thanks to that support, I learned to explain myself better, even if it still takes me a bit of time.

When I first arrived at the Trust, the staff helped me with everything I needed. They made me feel safe and supported, and over the years, they’ve helped me become the independent lady I am today. They taught me how to travel to places I didn’t know, helped me with practical things like folding my clothes, and even helped me get jobs—first at a day centre, and now at a charity shop. Twenty years ago, I couldn’t have imagined doing any of that.

Every day, the staff help me in the ways I need, like putting on some of my clothes and taking me to appointments. They also take me out for coffee when I need a chat, and we talk about my wellbeing, health, or anything I’m worried about. They’ve helped me build confidence, and now I’m more assertive and able to make decisions for myself.

One of the biggest changes has been learning to travel on my own. I used to worry about getting lost or managing buses, but now I know how to handle it. I can cook for myself too—I even made spaghetti bolognese with garlic bread recently! It’s little things like this that show me how far I’ve come.

The staff have always been there to listen, support, and encourage me. They’ve helped me learn to say no, to stand up for myself, and to deal with life’s challenges without feeling anxious or afraid. That’s what being part of the Lisieux Trust has meant for me: independence, confidence, and knowing I have a team of people who truly care.
