Carers Week Part 4: Changing My Life For The Better – By Irina
I’ve lived at Lisieux Trust for 20 years now, and looking back, it’s been quite a journey. When I first moved in, I came to Elms Road, and before that, I was at Derwen College [A Residential College In Shropshire for people with Learning or Physical Disabilities]. My mum wanted me to come to the Trust so I could become more independent, and that’s exactly what I wanted too.
I’ve actually lived in two places here—first at Elms Road, and now in my current home where my room is bigger and in the loft on the top floor. At first, there were lots of things I couldn’t do on my own—like travel by train or go to work—but over the years, the staff have supported me with all of that. They’ve helped me learn how to get around independently, and they’ve always been there to accompany me to places when I need extra support, like appointments or trips. I’m really proud of the progress I’ve made with travel training.
Every day, the staff help me in different ways. In the mornings, they take me to the gym or help me go shopping. In the evenings, they support me with cooking and preparing meals. Their help has been consistent, and I’ve learned a lot along the way. I feel much more independent now than when I first moved in, and I really like that feeling.
Even after all these years, I still have things I want to achieve. I’d like to travel more on my own—or meet my mum in Selly Park—but I still need some support from staff to get there. I’ve also been on holiday, both with my mum and with staff, which has been lovely.
Overall, I’ve always felt supported and cared for. I can’t really pick one staff member to thank in particular because so many of them have helped me in different ways over the years.
Looking back, I feel grateful for all the support I’ve had. It’s helped me become more independent and given me the confidence to do things I never thought I could do. Living here has truly changed my life for the better.
