Creativity Without Limits: How Performing Encourages Independence and Choice
Following the Lisieux Trust Talent Show 2026 at Hollyfields Sports and Conference Centre, it’s clear how transformative creative performance can be for people with Learning Disabilities and autism. Events like our Talent Show don’t just entertain — they give participants real opportunities to make choices, express themselves, and grow in confidence in ways that reflect the Trust’s values of Fun, Choice, Inspiring, Welcoming and Trust.
Creative performance — whether singing, dancing, drama, or movement — provides a space where individuals can explore their abilities, try new things, and feel pride in what they achieve. Many participants also take part in other creative projects, such as Steppin’ Up drama sessions, singing at Day Centres, or performing their own material online. One tenant regularly shares his own raps on social media, giving him a platform to express creativity and connect with a wider audience. Even tenants who were away during the Talent Show remain active in the arts — one has performed with Freefall Dance in partnership with the Birmingham Royal Ballet. In addition, the Trust has supported two pantomimes in 2024 and 2025, giving residents the chance to take part in larger-scale theatrical productions.
Behind every performance is the dedicated support of our staff. From helping with rehearsals, encouraging participation, adapting activities to individual needs, and providing guidance on stage, staff make it possible for residents and tenants to confidently take part and enjoy every creative opportunity.
Making Personal Decisions
Being part of a performance involves decisions — choosing a song, interpreting choreography, exploring a role, or creating original work like raps — that support individual autonomy. Creative environments encourage people to make meaningful choices, reinforcing the Trust’s value of Choice and helping participants feel in control of their contribution. Staff support helps everyone feel confident in making these choices.
Enjoying the Creative Journey
Performances are vibrant and engaging, filled with music, movement, and imagination. At the Talent Show, residents performed everything from Makaton-supported songs like “Sweet Caroline” to energetic dance routines, duets, musical theatre numbers, and ensemble pieces. Staff support ensures these experiences are fun, safe, and fully accessible, reflecting the Trust’s value of Fun.
Confidence and Self‑Belief Through Achievement
Rehearsing and performing helps build skills, confidence, and self-assurance. Many participants also develop these skills through other projects, including Steppin’ Up, Day Centre singing groups, Freefall Dance, pantomimes, or performing their own creations online. These experiences perfectly illustrate the Trust value of Inspiring, with staff helping participants reach these milestones.
Collaboration and Inclusive Spaces
Group performances provide supportive spaces where people can connect, collaborate, and feel accepted. Being part of duets, ensembles, or group songs encourages teamwork and mutual support, reflecting the Trust’s value of Welcoming. Staff help create these inclusive spaces, ensuring everyone can participate comfortably and confidently.
Developing Confidence and Independence
Creative projects require participants to rely on themselves and others, building trust in their own abilities and in the support around them. Performing with guidance from staff and encouragement from peers helps individuals develop independence and the confidence to try new challenges, embodying the Trust value of Trust.
Creativity Without Limits
The Talent Show, pantomimes, Freefall Dance, social media performances, and other drama and music opportunities throughout the year demonstrate that creativity has no boundaries. They allow people to explore, express themselves, and take pride in their achievements — all while experiencing the values that matter to Lisieux Trust: Fun, Choice, Inspiring moments, a Welcoming environment, and Trust. Staff support is at the heart of this, ensuring every participant has the guidance, encouragement, and confidence to shine.
