“Every Day Is Different”: Danielle’s Unexpected Journey into Care
Danielle didn’t plan on a career in care. In fact, before joining Lisieux Trust, she imagined something completely different.
“Before I had this job, I thought it would be more like an old people’s home — you go in, wipe bums, do this, do that. But it’s completely different.”
Her journey into social care came with a gentle nudge from someone who knows the sector well — her mum, Denise, who is one of Lisieux Trust’s Registered Managers.
“I’d just been made redundant and my mom said, ‘Why don’t you apply at Lisieux?’ I thought, why not — if I don’t like it, it’s not the end of the world. But within a month I absolutely loved it.”
Since starting, Danielle has embraced her role wholeheartedly — and her commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. She was recently nominated for Newcomer of the Year at the National Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards.
“I think there’s an achievement in it. I haven’t been here that long and I was surprised how well I took to the job. Everybody says how well I’ve done — I’ve just sort of slotted in.”
That natural fit is clear in the way she talks about the people she supports and the joy of everyday life at Lisieux Trust.
“I love doing stuff — activities, getting out, doing things. Every day is different. There’s always something new.”
Whether it’s going to the Thinktank, seeing UB40 live, or simply walking with someone to the gym, Danielle values the connection with each individual.
“It’s the personalities. Each house has its own feel — like little families. I think that’s what makes it special.”
And her message for anyone considering a role in care?
“Do it. It’s not like you think. It’s one of the best jobs ever — definitely.”
