A Lisieux Trust tenant is being celebrated for his contribution to improving NHS services, after receiving an award last month from Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust.

Mark was recognised for his work as part of a service user group, where he uses his lived experience to help shape mental health support for people with learning disabilities. His achievement feels especially meaningful during Learning Disability Awareness Week, which this year focuses on the theme “Do you see me?”—highlighting the importance of recognising people as individuals with voices, experiences and expertise.

Mark’s work brings that message to life.

Through regular meetings at Greenfields, he works alongside professionals to share his perspective and push for meaningful improvements. Speaking about his involvement, Mark said:
“I give them opinions of what I want to change and things,” showing his determination to make services better for others.
Discussions often focus on mental health and the need for services to respond more effectively. Mark is clear that listening must lead to action, explaining that he wants to see “more action” and stronger engagement from those making decisions.

As an expert by experience and an Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training trainer, Mark plays an important role in helping health and care staff better understand the needs of people with a learning disability and autistic people. His insight ensures that training is grounded in real lived experience.

Earlier this week, Mark also supported Lisieux Trust during filming with Central News, continuing to raise awareness. His confidence and openness help challenge perceptions and ensure people with a learning disability are seen and heard.

Mark values the opportunity to be involved and regularly contributes to the group, saying:
“I do go regularly when they call me.”

Colleagues at Lisieux Trust have praised his dedication and the impact of his work, highlighting how his voice is helping to shape more inclusive and responsive services.

While his award recognised his efforts last month, its significance resonates strongly during Learning Disability Awareness Week. Mark’s contribution reflects what “Do you see me?” is all about—ensuring people are not just included, but truly recognised, listened to and valued.

His achievement is not only a personal success but a powerful example of how people supported by Lisieux Trust are influencing positive change across the NHS.
