Mark Selected As An Expert

18 Apr 2024 | Category: News

One of our most socially active residents has reason to celebrate again after he was chosen to be an “expert by experience” on a major new Government initiative.

Mark, pictured above with some more work he’s helped contribute to for the Birmingham Foundation Trust, has been accepted to give his unique input on the “Oliver McGowan” Training, where he will be giving the benefit of his experience to everyone who is undertaking the mandatory training course.

He attended a formal interview with his mother and told us he was very excited to be part of the project: “I really want to help everyone,” he told us. “I want to make sure everyone’s mental health is talked about and everyone understands the problems people face. It’s very important.”

A dedicated charity activist and always engaged in his community, the interview process saw Mark asked about his experiences, as he explained: “They asked me about where I went to school, but also what I had done already for the NHS and mental health, It was good to be able to tell them about it all and I am looking forward to doing this.”

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training. The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that regulated service providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the standardised training that was developed for this purpose and is the government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff.

All staff at the Trust have already undertaken part one of the training and will be completing the rest of the course imminently.

There will be more on Mark’s involvement in the coming months.
