The Trust On Watch At Erdington Fire Station

Residents and Tenants from across the Trust family had a brilliant afternoon yesterday as they visited Erdington Fire Station.

They were the guests of Ian – who as well as being our gardener is a full-time fireman and invited the Trust family to have a look around, and they gleefully did just that.

The fun-filled visit started with a demonstration of the clothing worn for attending fires – which David (pictured) was only too keen to try on. Then the Watch (the name given to a Firemans shift) showed off the equipment that is included in the van, including the heavy cutter and the hoses, before asking the question: “Who wants a go on the hose?”

The Fire Engine was then driven outside and the guys took turns to spray the car park (and Deputy Manager, Emma, came in for a soaking too). Then the sirens were put on (scaring at least one member of Trust Head Office staff who shall remain nameless!) and the alarm was sounded that would usually alert the staff Watch to an emergency.

A packed couple of hours was ended with all of the Residents and Tenants having a look in the Fire Truck itself and sitting in the chairs that the Firemen and women would usually occupy.

Everyone agreed it was a brilliant afternoon, with Stephen saying: “The best thing was the hose, that was fun.” Michael agreed, adding: “It was brilliant.” For his part, Mark said: “My favourite bit was all of it!”

Conor was even more excited and reckoned he’s got a plan after the afternoon: “I want to be a fireman and teach children fire safety, I am going to apply.”

Ian – who has been a fireman for more than 20 years – admitted he was delighted to do this type of event: “Its great to show people what we do, we go to schools and fetes, and loads of things and seeing everyone enjoying themselves but also learning is excellent.”
