Volunteering at the Food Bank – My Story, By Sarah

I’ve recently started volunteering at the Methodist food bank, and I can honestly say it has been amazing. I go every Wednesday (except when it’s closed for things like Christmas Eve), and it’s become something I really look forward to.

One of my main jobs is helping to prepare food bags. I really enjoy this, especially measuring out bags of sugar. I use a cup to scoop the sugar and put it carefully into the food bags so they’re ready for people who need them. It feels good to know that something so simple can make a real difference.

I decided I wanted to volunteer because I like to help and support everybody. I want to make sure people have all the food they need. I think a lot about people who are struggling, including people who are homeless, people who have lost their homes, and people affected by things happening in places like Ukraine and Africa. I feel really sorry for them, and this is my way of trying to help.

I go to the food bank with Danielle (she’s my keyworker), and we have a good laugh while we work. One day Danielle spilled quite a lot of sugar on the floor – and even in her pocket – which was very funny and made us both laugh.

The staff at the food bank are really kind and friendly, which makes it an even nicer place to volunteer. I especially want to give a shout out to Julie, who is the manager of the food bank. She’s amazing and, on my first day, she showed me all the different things they do and helped me settle in.

We even get little treats sometimes, which is a nice bonus. I’ve had shortbread with chocolate bits on it.

Volunteering at the food bank makes me feel proud and happy. I know I’m helping people in my community, and that means a lot to me. I’m really glad I decided to do it, and I’m excited to keep going every Wednesday.
